MEDIA RELEASE : 7 March 2008

Mozambique – The Roxy Invitational Mozambique, the unique and ground-breaking girls-only surfing event, ran the first round of their event in picture-perfect waves at Ponto Do Oro. It was the new guard who dominated the first round, with 14 year-old Bianca Buitendag from George and 16 year-old Kirsty Delport from Durban really making their intentions clear with explosive surfing in their heats.
Former Pro Surf Tour champion Sarah Maritz, despite winning the third heat of the day, commented after seeing Bianca and Kirsty surf, about the importance of not underestimating the likes of these surfers. Maritz scored a solid 16 points out of a possible 20 for her decisive first round heat win.
In the fourth heat of the day it was young Delport who went to town on the flawless waves, showing to all that all the hard work and extra hours she has been putting in at the New Pier was all worth it. Kirsty, who has been charging some big sets at the New Pier recently, racked up a massive 9 points for her one wave, the highest scoring wave of the first round, and in the process deposed of multiple SA women's champ, Tamarys De Moroussem from the event.
With five days to go in the waiting period and the forecast of more good surf on the way, the surfers and contest organisers decided to hold off before running the two semi finals and the finals. Clean surf, morning offshores combined with a spring low tide could provide for some epic surf conditions over the next few days. The Red Bull events vehicle STRETCH has been on hand at the event as well, with a lounge, an open DJ platform and a mobile sound system and PA for the girls to enjoy.
