Jordy Smith was named South Africa’s first ever Surfer of the Year at the inaugural South African Surfing Awards presented by Zigzag in association with Paarl Web in Durban on Saturday 17 February.

2007 SA Junior Team for World Championships in Portugal in May 2007, announced
The Board of Directors of Surfing South Africa have announced the South African Junior team which will compete in the 2007 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships in Costa Da Caparika, Portugal from May 6 to 14 next year.

National under 18 champion Nikita Robb of East London added two more titles to her impressive tally of victories when she won both the premier Open Division final and the Under 18 final at the 2006 Roxy Wahine Cup presented by Peugeot and Samsung at Durban's Suncoast Beach, Sunday (December 3).

Op Pro Hawaii Win Puts Irons in the hunt for 4th Vans Triple Crown title
Hawaii's Andy Irons might have been beaten to the world title by Kelly Slater (Florida, USA) last month, but he hasn't wasted a moment dwelling on it. Picking up where he left off at Pipeline last December, Irons was back on the winner's stand today, taking out the Op Pro Hawaii final to get a jump on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Series ratings.

Chelsea Georgeson (AUS), the reigning ASP Women's World Champion, has defended her Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle title today with a win over current world No. 1 Melanie Redman-Carr (AUS) at Les Bourdaines today. Georgeson remains third on the ASP ratings, but has lessened the gap between her and world No. 2 Layne Beachley (AUS). Redman-Carr who fell to second in the world last week, is back on top after her runner-up finish to Georgeson.

Southern KZN retain Team Trophy at 2006 Peugeot SA Masters Championships
Hosts Southern KZN retained the Team Trophy at the Peugeot SA Masters Championships at St Mikes today (Sunday ) but they needed to pull out all the stops to fend off a determined Zululand team who when all was said and done, finished just 46 points the champions in a 33500 point spread.
This victory was a special one forSouthern KZN who, although they won the title last year had to celebrate away from St Mikes as the event was completed at Durban's Bay of Plenty.
This year the surf played ball at St Mikes producing contestable conditions on the first three days and 4 - 6 foot surf for the finals and a jubilant Southern KZN were able to claim a major victory in home waters for the first time in South African surfing history.

South African surfers claim victories in Japan and England
In arguably the best day of competition surfing by South Africans on the international stage, Roydon Bryson and David Weare claimed victories in ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) events on opposite sides of the globe.
Bryson, the only SA competitor in the 6 Star rated R875 000 Billabong presents the Yumeya Tahara Pro in Japan, earned himself R105 000 and a priceless 2 500 ratings points that have rocketed the East Londoner into second place on the WQS rankings. On Sunday Bryson convincingly defeated Brazilian Bernardo Miranda with two 9.0 point rides in the final of the event, after overcoming current ratings leader Neco Padaratz and fellow Brazilian Victor Ribas in their respective semi and quarter-final heats.

Durban's John Whittle Takes The Red Bull Big Wave Africa 2006
In conditions that varied between 12-foot and 15-foot during the day, with some even bigger outside sets, John Whittle put his head down and won the eighth edition of the Red Bull Big Wave Africa. In a final that saw a south-easter come up and blow into some giant right-hand barrels, John picked up set waves and rode them with aplomb to secure the vote from the assembled judges. "I'm just the favoured son today," said an emotional John at the prize giving, held at the harbour-side immediately after the contest had finished.

Fanning on fire in phenomenal final at Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, Jordy Smith places third in first ever WCT event
Mick Fanning produced an awesome display of high performance power surfing to clinch a narrow but deserved second Billabong Pro victory in excellent 1.5 to two metre (4-6 foot) surf at Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay on Sunday. Fanning and fellow Aussie Taj Burrow matched each other wave after amazing wave during the 35 minutes final with 25 year-old “White Lightening” getting a 16.90 to 16.0 point verdict from the judges for his fully committed rail carves, slashing cutbacks and vertical lip bashes.

2006 Peugeot SA Masters Surfing Championships all set for St Mikes in August
The tournament, which caters for surfers in four different categories and features teams from all eight provinces, will be celebrating its second year of action at the famous St Mike's point break and once again will cater for surfers in the Senior Men (28 to 34), Masters (35 to 44),Veterans (45 to 54) and Legends (over 55). The surfers will compete for individual honours in each of the divisions while at the same time generating points for their provincial team. The winning provincial team will take home the Peugeot Trophy which was won by the hosts, Southern KZN, last year. The eight provinces that are expected to participate are Southern KZN, KwaZuluNatal, Western Province, Border, Eastern Province, Zululand, Boland and Southern Cape.
